Texture and Light.
That's what it always seems to come down to, whether you want to draw a cool image that you found or design an entire building. The quality of the textures and the light that is cast upon them is what really brings an image (or space) to life. The next time you come across something that captures your attention, take a few extra moments to really take it in. What about is is so striking? What might be playing an important "backup role" that would usually go unnoticed? Is it the contrast of light and dark tones? Is it the negative space around the image that actually makes it pop? The overt and subtle play of these various elements often have a big impact on how we feel about a certain piece of artwork or how we feel in the built environment - even if they go unnoticed consciously in our busy lives and busy minds.
